You may be buying and using emeralds for a long time and you keep wondering where does the green color of this gemstone come from?, how such spectacular color is formed? Well here we will explain you in the best simple terms why these gemstones are green!
As we mentioned before, emeralds consist of a material called Beryl. Beryl has a chemical formula of (Be2Al2Si6Ol8) which is a silicate. Beryl is found as crystals; those crystals are produced in the earth’s crust opposite to diamond and peridot which are formed in the earth’s mantle. When an aluminum (Al) atom in the structure of Beryl is replaced by a chromium atom, which usually is found as an impurity in Beryl crystals, it gives a green color to the beryl crystals, which when pure, are colorless. Chromium also is an impurity of another type of crystals, the corundum, forming the beautiful red rubies. The green color then is a product of how the light interacts with the crystal when a chromium atom lies within the structure. When the crystals are exposed to white light (light that contains all the colors) the crystals absorbs the blue and red light and emits or reflect back only the green light, this is because the chromium atom is changing the absorption properties of the crystal. In pure Beryl, the crystal does not absorb any of the colors and that is why it is transparent.
Vanadium has a similar effect as chromium in the structure of beryl and it is also a common component of emeralds. Think about this next time you are holding an emerald engagement ring or an emerald earring, the green color is caused by the interaction of light with the chromium or vanadium atoms in the beryl crystal. Green beryl, another gemstone consist of beryl crystals containing iron impurities, these are not classified as emeralds due to the fact that when you heat the stone the color change or disappears. So do not confuse green beryl with emeralds.

In the last post we introduce you to the concept of a synthetic emerald, synthetic emeralds are another option you could consider when buying a couple of emerald pendants or an emerald engagement ring, or any other type of jewelry associated with this gemstone.
To be clear synthetic emeralds are emeralds made in a laboratory through a scientific process while real emeralds are the gemstones found in the mines during excavation, for example Colombian emeralds are found in the mines of Chivor. Real emeralds are more attracting and more valuable due to their unique characteristics but still you can find great offers from synthetic emeralds.
We discussed earlier about the methods for production of synthetic emeralds which are mainly two, the flux-melt origin and the hydrothermal method. Today we will discuss how to distinguish real emeralds from synthetic ones.
First at all you can find synthetic emeralds by their labels such as “lab emerald”, “created emerald”, “synthetic emerald” or a specific brand name like “Chatman emeralds”. Of course a dishonest vender would not tell you that and you will have to know how to distinguish them by yourself. The second aspect that you can look when buying emeralds is how perfect it is. Natural emeralds tend to have defects, like inclusions. Inclusions consist of any materials trapped inside the gemstone, like other solids (crystals), water or even air bubbles or any other gas. Many natural emeralds come with inclusions (solids or liquids) and is very rare to find them lacking of inclusions. Some people refer to inclusions as gardens because they resemble plant foliage and they are like fingerprints and can be use to find the geographical origin of an emerald depending on the type of materials included in them. In terms of inclusions is always better to buy an emerald that has little inclusions on it than one who don’t have inclusions at all.
Also is difficult to find perfectly clear and very bright green color emeralds in the market. Emeralds are great gemstones but you should learn some basic tips about them before buying it, you don’t want to find out later that your emerald pendants or emerald engagement rings are made from synthetic emeralds!

First, a little of history
The pursue for the fabrication of synthetic emeralds come from a long time ago. This has been drove by the necessity to obtain useful materials for different technological porpoises or to simulate the real gemstones for their use in jewelry.
The development of techniques for the growth of emeralds crystals comes from the middle of the 19th century when Ebelmen dissolved the first emerald and recrystallized it to form small emerald crystals. Later on it was concluded that the formation of emeralds by recrystallization was not good enough due to the limited control over the nucleation of the crystals.
Later on, two methods were developed, one which is called the flux-melt origin and the hydrothermal method. These two methods are the actual ones for the production of emeralds and will be discuss later on in this blog. In the next post, we will describe how you can distinguish a synthetic emerald in you emerald jewelry like your emerald engagement ring.

Trapiche emeralds are a rare kind of emeralds that can give an attractive touch your jewelry. Either as trapiche emerald earrings, trapiche emerald rings or trapiche engagement rings, this fabulous class of gemstone can give a unique touch to your appearance. But what is a trapiche emerald?
In the emerald mines of Colombia (not Columbia neither Columbian emeralds mines, read why here: Columbia do not produce emeralds, but Colombia does. (Columbian emeralds don’t exist)), were the best emeralds of the world are mined, trapiche emeralds are rarely found and are very appreciated because of their unique features. Trapiche is a Spanish word which is related to the wheels used for milling sugar cane; this word is used in the world of emeralds because many trapiche emeralds resemble the shape of a mill helixes or a star pattern.
This unique feature of the trapiche emeralds is related with the geological formation of the emeralds in Colombian mountains at Chivor and Gachalá (Colombia, the largest producer of emeralds for your emerald earrings!). This rare type of emeralds has inclusions resembling a hexagonal core. They are formed in two stages during crystallization of the stone, first, the central hexagonal core is formed, which is interrupted causing a crust to cover the crystals, then a second stage of crystallization happens that include the parallel growth of six prism shaped emerald crystals that grow around the initial crystal in the center.
